FDA Approves Extended Product Claims for LiquiBand® Exceed™ Topical Skin Adhesive

Winsford, UK, 3 November 2015 – Advanced Medical Solutions Group plc (AIM: AMS.L), the surgical and advanced woundcare specialist company, today announced that the FDA has approved two new product claims for the octyl formulation product, LiquiBand Exceed™ giving it a competitive advantage in the topical skin adhesive market.

These claims will allow AMS and partners to differentiate LiquiBand Exceed™ around wound coverage, yield and reuse, providing clinicians with the ability to increase the usage of a single applicator, saving time and cost.

The two new claims include the use of a single device to cover wounds of up to 30cm, as well as a single device being suitable for intraoperative reuse for up to 90 minutes on a single patient. Both claims are unique FDA approved claims for the US Topical Skin Adhesive Market.

Following testing, LiquiBand® Exceed™ was found to deliver best in class yield to support coverage up to 30cm of wound length1, twice the amount advertised by market leading topical skin adhesive products2.  Due to the proprietary LiquiBand Exceed™ formula, the adhesive polymerises via skin contact using naturally occurring skin moisture meaning that the applicator device does not dry out.  In-vitro testing proved the device could continually express glue in intervals for up to 90 minutes after device activation.1

Chris Meredith, Chief Executive Officer of AMS, commented: LiquiBand Exceed™ has been an excellent addition to our LiquiBand® topical skin adhesive portfolio demonstrating encouraging initial uptake since its launch this year.  These extended US product claims will help us to continue to provide a superior product for clinicians and a versatile solution for healthcare providers in this key market, in which we are focused on growing our market share.

Results of US pilot study on LiquiBand®

effectiveness in closing scalp lacerations

Winsford, UK: Researchers from the University of Florida-Jacksonville, College of Medicine presented the results of a pilot study utilising LiquiBand® topical skin adhesive at the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) Scientific Assembly in San Francisco, October 15-18, 2011. The study demonstrated the effectiveness of LiquiBand® in the closure of scalp lacerations.

Dermal adhesives are commonly used for facial wound repairs but are rarely used in the US for scalp wounds. LiquiBand® is a fast polymerizing, medical grade adhesive (cyanoacrylate) that has been successfully used in Europe for topical skin closure, including closing scalp wounds, for more than ten years. This is, however, the first study in the US that specifically addresses the use of dermal adhesives on scalp wounds. Emergency physicians measured ease-of-use, closure time, wound appearance and complications, while patients assessed wound appearance post-closure and pain levels during application.

The physicians involved in the study found that LiquiBand® treated scalp wounds very effectively, giving an average score of 4.67 out of 5. Patients reported very low pain scores during the procedures, and all parties indicated that they would use LiquiBand® again rather than traditiional staples or sutures.

Commenting on this announcement, Chris Meredith, Chief Executive Officer of AMS commented: “This small pilot study clearly supports what we already knew, namely that LiquiBand® can be used safely for rapid closure of simple scalp lacerations with minimal pain and excellent cosmetic outcomes. However, the key aspect of this study is that it is the first of its kind in the US. The results pave the way for a larger prospective study to be undertaken, but we believe that the high levels of reported physician and patient satisfaction should give direct support to the already encouraging marketing initiatives of our partners in that key market.”

About Advanced Medical Solutions Group plc – see www.admedsol.com

Advanced Medical Solutions Group is a global business providing innovative products and brands in the areas of accelerating healing and managing wounds, minimising adverse surgical outcomes and sealing and closing tissue. These products are sold in countries across the globe either directly or through a number of strategic partners and distributors.

AMS’ advanced woundcare products are based on an extensive range of technologies including alginates, silver alginates and hydrophilic polyurethane foams. These and other products pioneer the concept of moist wound healing, allowing wounds to heal faster and with less pain and scarring. They protect the wound, deal with tissue fluids, provide an optimal environment for healing to occur and, in the case of silver alginates, include a safe and effective broad-spectrum anti-microbial agent for infection control.

AMS’ wound closure and sealants products are based on cyanoacrylate adhesive (“superglue”) technology developed for medical applications. Tissue adhesives offer significant benefits over conventional ways of closing wounds following trauma or surgical incision. They are simple to use, non-invasive, help to reduce the risk of infection, minimise trauma to the patient and provide good clinical and cosmetic outcomes. The technology is also ideally suited to protecting skin from breakdown or for use as a skin sealant to help prevent infection of surgical sites.

ActivHeal® is a value range of products provided directly to the NHS by AMS as a first line therapy for routine wounds. These complement the use of AMS’s new technologies, such as silver alginatewhich are sold through strategic partners for treating more difficult wounds.

The ActivHeal® range offers equivalent technical and clinical performance to similar branded products but at a substantially reduced cost thereby delivering real and immediate savings to the NHS. This potential saving is estimated to be of the order of £25 million per year in the UK which helps to balance budgets and afford new technologies for problematic cases.    ActivHeal® products are currently used in around half of the NHS Foundation and Acute Hospital Trusts in the UK. Hospital usage represents around 25% of the current £100 million NHS spend on advanced woundcare dressings with the majority being in the community.

In the study reported in the British Journal of Nursing, the ActivHeal® range of dressings consisting of foams, films, alginates, gels and hydrocolloids were substituted for “branded” dressings over a three-month period in 2007 during which time dressing cost and clinical effectiveness were assessed. The result was an equivalent yearly cost saving of £55,221 (54%) with retention of performance standards across the dressing range.

The study adds: “Two years after the trial, wards in University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust continue to benefit from significant annual cost savings on dressings by using the ActivHeal® range of products, while maintaining a high standard of clinical care.

Commenting on this announcement, Dr. Don Evans, Chief Executive Officer of Advanced Medical Solutions, stated:

This study, which fully endorsed the ActivHeal® value offering, is of particular relevance because pressure on healthcare budgets is putting increasing importance on the achievement of cost savings without compromising patient care.

This “in-use” study at a major London teaching hospital rated the dressings as “equivalent to” or “better than” the original dressings in almost all cases and allowed a significant cost saving to be made by switching to ActivHeal®.”
